Rash Q&A

Why did I develop a rash?

Rashes are areas of irritated or swollen skin. They may itch, feel dry, or be quite painful. Some rashes feature blisters, hives, or pimples, which may burst and cause scarring or infection. They may look scaly, dry, or blotchy.

Common causes of rashes include:

  • Hives
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Rosacea
  • Ringworm
  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Contact dermatitis

Rashes develop due to heat, allergens, infections, immune system disorders, and the use of certain medications.

When should I see a dermatologist for a rash?

If your rash develops suddenly, spreads rapidly, and/or covers a large area of your body, or if you have one that doesn’t resolve after a day or two, reach out to Allustra Dermatology. You should also seek care if the rash looks particularly angry or is very painful. A rash that persists despite your at-home attempts to control it also deserves medical attention.

Dr. Balaraman does an evaluation to identify the type of rash you have. She may request allergy testing or take a sample of your skin to determine the underlying cause of your rash.

Is it possible to manage a rash at home?

Some rashes clear up fairly quickly, especially when you clean them and use common treatments. Certain rashes respond well to over-the-counter topical hydrocortisone cream, moisturizers, lotions, cooling baths, and oral antihistamines.

Other rashes may last a longer time and require professional medical management. Chronic conditions like eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis cause rashes that aren’t always treatable with over-the-counter products.

A dermatologist like Dr. Balaraman offers prescription medications, light therapy, and other treatments to treat these conditions and kee symptoms under control. Long-term treatment helps you minimize flare-ups and severe outbreaks.

Laser treatments may also help ease the redness associated with rosacea. And, if you have scarring associated with previous rashes, Allustra Dermatology offers laser treatment and microneedling to help restore a smoother, more even toned complexion.

If you or someone in your family has developed a rash, it’s a good idea to reach out to Allustra Dermatology to have it diagnosed and treated. Call today to schedule your appointment or use the online tool.
